♦ Personal Statement

Ju Han Kim, M.D., Ph.D., M.S. is a Professor and Founding Chairs of the Division of Biomedical Informatics, Seoul National University College of Medicine and of Interdisciplinary Program of Medical Informatics of Seoul National University Graduate School. He established Systems Biomedical Informatics National Core Research Center at Seoul National University in 2010.
Ju Han Kim obtained his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Seoul National University in Seoul, South Korea and completed his residency training in Neuro-psychiatry at Seoul National University Hospital in 1996. During his residency program in 1995, Ju Han Kim has developed a psychiatric electronic medical record system, PsyBase, which is cited as the first real practice use of electronic medical record in Korea.Ju Han Kim’s carrier has been focused on the state-of-the-art information technology and its impact on and utility of clinical medicine and biomedical research.
Dr. Kim joined Dr. Charles Safran’s Center for Clinical Computing at Boston’s BIDMC in 1997. One of his project, SeniorMed, is considered as a very early version of PHR and consumer engagement based on standard HL-7/XML messaging technology to facilitate direct physician-patient communication. Getting more interested in the rapidly developing fieldof bioinformatics, Dr. Kim joined the Children’s Hospital Informatics Program at BostonsChildrens Hospital, Harvard Medical School as an Instructor of Medicine in Biomedical Informatics. He obtained anadditional M.S. degree in Biomedical Informatics at MIT and became an assistant professor of Harvard Medical School. Dr. Kim returned back to Seoul National University College of Medicine and founded Div. of Biomedical Informatics. He has developed a series of prominent bioinformatics softwares and algorithms as well as integrative models and databases.
His research focuses on integration of clinical and genomic data. His Health Avatar CCR+ is cited as the first working PHR in Korea. DNet is a nation-wide network of (institution-centered) EMR, (physician-centered iPad) DialysisNet, and (patient-centered smartphone PHR) Avatar Beans connects 14 teaching hospitals, physicians, and their patients. KidsNet is a sister network for childhood leukemia, sequencing personal genomes to protecting them from severe adverse drug reactions to realize precision medicine. His leadership at the intersection of medical informatics and bioinformatics can be described by his prominent effort in founding a renowned international conference, the Translational Bioinformatics Conference. The 7th TBC 2017 will be held in Los Angeles, CA, this year chaired by Professor Marylyn D. Ritchie at Geisinger.

♦ Contributions to Science

1. Medical Informatics:
Ju Han Kim, M.D., Ph.D., have developed a psychiatric electronic medical record system, PsyBase, in 1995which is cited as the first real practice use of EMR in Korea.Ju Han Kim’s carrier has been focused on the state-of-the-art information technology and its impact on and utility of clinical medicine and biomedical research. In 1997 he joined Drs. Charles Safran and Warner Slack who have developed prominent hospital information system and interactive computing in Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. One of Ju Han Kim’s fellowship project, SeniorMed, is designed to provide chronically ill elderly patients with their prescription information stored in legacy hospital information system augmented with modern medication databases with secure internet connectivity and standard HL-7/XML messaging technology for the purpose of facilitating direct physician-patient communication and enhancing the quality of care. The current buzz word, PHR or Personal Health Record, can be regarded as an evolved form of the ‘disclosure’ things.
